We went on a weekday night to check it out after a group had a get-together here that I couldn't attend. I was thinking about getting some people together for dim sum for my birthday next month and wanted to check the place out. When we were seated, we were given a restaurant menu and had to ask for the dim sum menu. There weren't any dim sum carts -- just a paper with some dim sum items listed that we could choose from. We picked out a few things that we knew we liked and a few things that we hadn't tried before. Our waitress took our order and another gentlemen refilled our drinks. When the food came out, it looked ok. It was hard for us to tell what was what, which was to be expected. A few things that we ordered (beef rice roll, specifically) were very unappetizing and difficult to eat. Overall, we found that the food was very bland... and that's coming from a person that generally likes bland food. I never add anything to my soups, salads, etc but found myself smothering everything in soy sauce just to get some sort of flavor from it. We took the rest of our food to go and headed out. We had our leftovers sitting in the car and ran into Wegmans afterwards to pick up a few things. When we got back to the car, the leftovers had made the car smell like... well... a fart. It was really weird and we were both really grossed out (and secretly wondering if the other person was to blame). We tossed the leftovers in the Wegmans garbage (sorry, Wegmans employees!) and the scent was quickly gone. Maybe their restaurant-menu food is better or we just came on a day when they weren't really doing dim sum since their reviews seem to be very high. We didn't spend very much on our meal ($20ish) so we weren't too disappointed but we probably wouldn't go back after the leftovers fiasco. If you like dim sum, I'd say give it a shot -- with the reviews being so high, I think we probably just got a bad night.

Tried it once... wouldn't go back. Braised ribs were very chewy and fatty.. steamed shrimp rice roll was OK but the rice roll was definitely the premade type you buy at the supermarket. The beef steamed rice roll was garbage... century year old egg congee was bland. Sticky rice in lotus leaves was decent.

If you want dim sum this is the spot to go. They got it for good prices as well. Make sure you order by quantity though. My favorite is the crab legs you HAVE to try that. Some advice: Order mayo and spicy sauce on the side and mix them 70 mayo 30 spicy to dip the crab legs in.

Been here for both dimsum and dinner. Definitely liked dimsum a lot more. I've been here prior to them moving to the current location. Not much changed. Dimsum is reasonably priced and they almost have all the stuff I want here. Among other things, the radish cake is great. As for the dinner menu, the meat dishes were okay. The tofu / vegetable dishes were definitely better. 4 out of 5 stars. Would come back again.

I think I might be in heaven. I haven't had dim sum since I was a young lad in Boston's Chinatown, so I was extremely eager to try out Canton House, and luckily we chose it for Supper Club(after another restaurant shut down, OOPS!). They have both dim sum and a traditional Chinese(Americanized) and Cantonese menu. Apparently you need to ask for the dim sum menu, which I was overly excited to receive. Our group of 8 ordered probably 30 dishes in total and it was simply way too much food, but only ended up costing us around $15 with tip, and everyone had a take home doggie bag filled with dim sum goodness. The BBQ pork buns were sweet and delicious, and my all time favorite dim sum dish which I think can be loosely translated to shrimp noodle was delicious. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was still yummy and nostalgic at the same time. We also dined on a variety of dumplings, but the shrimp ones were my favorite by far. I would recommend trying the taro cake or dumpling or whatever it is, as well. It was an extremely interesting flavor and texture, and I'll definitely try it again next time. I would strongly suggest taking a group of people here so that you can try a variety of things on the menu, this way you will know what to order when you come back, because believe me when I say that I will be coming back very soon!

Delicious dim sum! What a surprise is was for us to find dim sum comparable to our dim sum mecca of Houston. The restaurant was packed with locals which is always a good sign. The staff was friendly and helpful. When in Rochester, we will certainly patronize again.

Bland, cold, the meat was slimy and grey. Never again.

Always good. At noon, they serve dimsum which is really tasty. Real Chinese food. 周末可以过来悠闲的吃点心。凤爪,糯米鸡好吃。炒米粉也很不错。

It was pretty bad compared to what I'm use to, I wish I was multi-lingual because that whole language barrier thing in the states kills me.

Usually my wife and I shop at the market next door to this place. However one morning we decided to try the restaurant. Great food and friendly staff. My wife always get the rice soup and I like the shrimp dumplings! Best time is Saturday morning at 10:00 am.

Pretty good place to get authentic dim sum. It's also fairly cheap, I've come twice and although we were a big group each time, we've only paid around $11-20 each. I give it 2 stars because of service, the waitresses are usually not very caring, which I guess makes this place more authentically Chinese, but there was a dead ant on our table and we asked to switch but the waitress started complaining about the hassle, even though the restaurant had almost ten other open tables. While ordering you just pick from the carts they push around, if you don't know the names or speak Chinese it's easy enough to just point at what you want. You should just try any dish you think looks good, they are all cooked pretty well and enjoyable. My favourite is the porridge they serve (you'll have to ask for that) and their egg tarts. Would come back maybe once or twice a year, but don't expect anything above average.

Best place for dim sum. Its real cheap. But you are going to have a hard time if you dont know dim sum culture or any knowledge about them in Cantonese coz the ladies dont understand English. For other food, I recommend the beef pepper steak, chow fun and walnut shrimp.

  • Lex C.

Ordered the chow mei fun from here for take out. I barely ate any of it. Everything was over cooked, the noodles was so cooked that it was brown and chewy. The rest of the ingredient - vegetables and meats lacked flavor. I ate it out of necessity because of hunger, but couldn't bare more than couple bites. My dog ate the rest. Hate to be all negative but I am too disappointed and disgusted to see any positive from this instance. Sometimes I wonder if these Chinese restaurants are bias based on who orders it because every time my Chinese friends orders it, it tastes great. Here's a news flash for all Asian restaurants workers/cooks. Us non Asian people have taste buds too, and knows what good food tastes likes.

Came here for lunch with my family on a Sunday and man was it packed. The entrance was rather small so customers who were waiting to either get a number or get a table were all over the place. To my surprise however, the wait wasn't long at all- no more than 20 minutes for a table of 8. The food was good but there wasn't a variety of plates to choose from and some tasted a little bland. Many of the carts had the same dishes on them. The only dishes that I really enjoyed were the clams and the eggplants. We also ordered the walnut shrimp from the menu just to have something else but it wasn't all that great either. The shrimps just tasted like it was smothered in mayonnaise and that's it. This place is alright, honestly. Nothing special compared to other dim sum restaurants I've been to. Although the wait wasn't too long, the food was just meh.

Awesome dim sum, has to be the best in western ny. My wife and I drive here once every few weeks from Buffalo. We love their dim sum, congee and those fried shrimp things with the white sauce... they also have a great asian store with fresh seafood, roasted duck and everything else in between. Only wish this place was in Buffalo =)

  • Steph S.

Went here for dim sum. I really appreciate the traditional style of dim sum where the asian ladies push around the carts. I also really liked how they had a variety of dim sum dishes. However, the food does not taste super juicy, so maybe its frozen? I guess this is an ok place if you want dim sum fast. I heard that their main courses are a lot better than their dim sum. I will probably be back to try this.

Pleasantly surprised at how good the dim sum was! There was one plate in particular that was really good! I don't remember what it was called but it's kind of like pajeon (Korean green onion pancake) w/shrimp that's in a dumpling bun form - YUM. I would go back just for that plate. So happy I found a go-to place for dim sum - would definitely go back again! Parking: there's a small lot in front and the back.

  • Chong Yu L.

Service is not very reliable since they don't care us sitting here 20min and no one gives a damn about it. They just run around seemed busy with their own business, but nobody really cares about if you had food comes around or being served. The food was mediocre, compared to Cantonese restaurants in flushing.

My go-to place for dim sum in Rochester! I believe you can order from the dim sum menu all day but it definitely does not match up to the dim sum on Saturday mornings. In addition to the dim sum, I highly recommend the flounder casserole. It comes with roast pork and deep fried tofu in a clay pot which helps it stay hot the entire meal. I always substitute the deep fried tofu for egg tofu though (extra few dollars but well worth it). I have one additional comment with regards to service. If you appear Chinese to them, they WILL try to speak to you in Chinese. I'm Korean and do not speak Chinese but every time I visit Canton House, without fail, they will try to strike up a conversation with me in Chinese. You've been warned.

Great dimsum! I'm originally from LA, and really missed getting dimsum on sunday mornings until I found this place!! They recently moved locations, so beware! They use to be on winton now it's closer to the market place mall. If you're brave, try the chicken feet!

My husband and I went to dim sum many times with friends when Cantonese House was located on Winton and always enjoyed it. We just tried them again at their new spot off of West Henrietta Rd on Commerce Drive (the street right across from Car Max) and had a great time. It was me, my husband & brother. Our brother had never been to dim sum before so we were excited to show him some of our favs. We arrived around 10:35am on Saturday morning and were the first seated in the large dining room. (There were a few families seated in the small dining area already.) we thought: wow - it's quiet! But that didn't last for long. By 11am it was packed! Lots of couples and small families and a few large families with well-behaved kids. As soon as we sat down a woman brought us a pot of green tea, which we always enjoy. Then the women with the carts immediately started coming by to offer us a variety of delicious dim sum treats. With only three of us we probably didn't order as large a variety as we usually do, but we still had a great selection of food at the table. We always get the hot sauce and blend a small amount of it with soy sauce on our plates for extra spice & flavor. We started with crab legs which were meaty and delicious. We all thought they needed to be dipped in our individual soy/hot sauce blends for extra flavor. This was a common theme throughout dim sum. We don't mind the food being slightly under-seasoned because we'd rather control the saltiness and spicyness with the perfect individual blend of soy & hot sauce. Then came these chunky mushroom-pork purses, shrimp shumai, shrimp & scallion meatballs, vegetable plate (it's all the same veggie), steamed bbq pork buns, pork sticky rice, spring rolls with pork, veggies & shrimp, sesame balls with sweet sticky bean purée and a triangular-shaped pastry with sweet black bean purée. I liked everything, but my favorites were the mushroom-pork purses, shrimp & scallion meatballs, crab legs, steamed pork buns & sesame balls. The pork purses had chunks of pork (not stringy or mushy) and We thought there was also mushroom as they had an earthy flavor. I liked them without the dipping sauce, but they were better with the sauce (like basically everything). The shrimp/scallion meatball was mild and definitely needed the dipping sauce, but I liked the flavors and having the onion in it (compared with the shrimp shumai which have a slippery texture & no onion flavor). The steamed bbq pork buns are always a crowd favorite. So delicious! Fluffy buns, yummy filling. No dipping sauce needed (but it's still good with them!). The sesame balls are an awesome way to end the meal - the ball is fried perfectly crisp & coated with white sesame seeds and then when you bite into it the dough is chewy and warm with a lightly sweet and nutty bean purée in the center. Our total was $36 plus tax & tip, so it was a pretty good value for three people, as we were all totally stuffed. We will have to go back and try an even bigger variety of food as we turned down a few items that looked interesting and delicious.

Setting: It wasn't crowded around 11am, unlike what some reviews said, so I was surprised! There were a lot of young people (20 something year olds) rather than families that I usually see. But I've only been here once so I'm not sure what it's usually like. When you first enter the restaurant, you are in a kind of small room, then there's another room in the back. Also adjacent to the small room is a door to a small chinese supermarket. Food: The dim sum is pretty good! It's about $2.75 for a small, $3.25 for a medium. They have a lady pushing a cart around, the way dim sum should be.

The best dim sum in all the Rochester! Phenomenal dim sum dishes in the middle of no where. The restaurant is new to the area but the management has been serving dim sum for a long period of time. Before Canton House was established the also own the Cantonese House on Winton Road. They have a small parking lot in-front of the restaurant but also have a much bigger lot in the back. Dim Sum: (crystal shrimp dumplings, shrimp wrapped in rice noodles, sui mai, beef wrapped in rice noodles, fried taro dumpling, fung zao (chicken feet), lo bak go (another type or taro) and spare ribs! ) This place was able to satisfy my craving for dim sum in upstate. I will highly recommend this restaurant to all people look for a descent dim sum restaurant in Rochester. The service is slower but still courteous. It took the waitress to noticed a while to noticed we was out of water/tea. The food came out together but took a while to make in the back. This reducing this restaurant to four stars! I will be back and re-review very soon! The bonus is that after eating the supermarket is connected to the resturnat so you can by those asian grocery.

My boyfriend and I had a night stay in Rochester and desired some really good food for dinner to offer ourselves. I searched on Yelp and found this high-rated Chinese restaurant not far from our hotel. We were quite satisfactory with what we ordered - Roasted Duck (烧鸭), Canton House Specialty Pot(广东楼一品煲), and Wonton Egg Soup(云吞蛋花汤). I hope my English translation for the dishes are correct or near, since we ordered using only the menu in Chinese. All were served hot and tasted yummy. The waitress was very nice and we were also greeted by the manager. If I had another chance visiting here, I would like to choose a Saturday morning for all the dim sum recommended by other yelpers!B-)

Attend Yelp event here! And this is my first time eating at Chinese restaurant with American... We ordered A LOT of dim sum (and I didn't know their English names before this dinner) but my favorite ones were not available (egg tart, etc.). The first dish was pig ear (is it the right name in English?) and I complained "why it's warm? It's supposed to be COLD!" But anyway, I haven't eat pig ear for quite a long time. Another popular dim sum is scallion pancake. Of course it was something from the frozen food section of Chinese/Asian supermarket, which might be the best we can get in Rochester. I stopped complaining since I didn't want to be annoying. FYI the REAL scallion pancake is larger, thicker, crispier, comes with no dipping sauce. The best one that I came across is from a small seafood noodle restaurant in Shanghai... I ordered custard buns since other sweet deserts were not available. The good thing with custard buns is that you can hardly find any difference in taste between freshly made ones and frozen ones. I really like them. Most of the dim sum on the table can be purchased in Asian market or the one behind Canton House and we can easily cook at home. People there are very kind and patient (the ones that I've talked to all spoke good Mandarin instead of Cantonese). An uncle even helped me open the back door so that I could reach the backyard parking lot. The dining area is much better than the old one on Winton Rd (which was narrow, crowded, noisy and dim). UPDATE after eating take-home buns: Chinese BBQ bun is amazing! It's filled with lean meat (personally I prefer lean but the bun is usually filled with fat)! I'm deeply moved... but the custard one smells weird for some reason.

We come here almost every week to have dinner and get together with family. We used to go to the other location in the Win-Jeff plaza but that location closed and now they're tucked back off of W Henrietta road. I'll start with the good things: Food. The food is incredible. It's delicious and there are hearty portions. They obtain their groceries fresh from NYC every week, usually a couple times a week. They have very good dim sum on the weekends, especially Sundays. You have to taste it to believe it. The dim sum is made fresh from scratch, as is most of the food. You usually won't have to wait for a table, unless it's a special occasion or Sunday dim sum. I think they have the best hot & sour soup in town. And the best crispy spring rolls. Get the baked roast pork buns and the steamed roast pork buns to compare. They are delicious. And so are the shu mai and shrimp dumplings. Nice, plump, and juicy. Awesome with a touch of hot sauce. Now for the other things: Service is ok at best. I don't think the waiters and waitresses are formally trained in waiting tables. If you have ever gone to Chinatown in NYC or LA and go to one of the not so fancy restaurants, you know what I'm talking about. The service is better during dim sum on Sundays. Otherwise, not very impressive. However, the owners are extremely gracious and wonderful people. I have to mention that they sometimes have family members, including kids, present and they can get a bit loud. I'm very understanding of the situation because it's in the culture to have family there, especially since they are from mainland China. But it's just a heads up to those who are not as appreciative of that. Overall, I think it's a good restaurant. We enjoy the food and the company.

I used to like the location on Winton Road. But this location just isn't the same. First they don't mention that their Winton Road location closed. So we drove by multiple times before being able to track them down and confirm that they had moved to Commerce. Nonetheless the woman who I spoke with on the phone was extremely nice and helpful. The space is interesting. Located in the industrial park area and has multiple cameras zoning onto the entrance and parking lot. A little strange since it's not a bad area to be in. The interior didn't look new or as if they had just moved in. Looked old and dirty to be honest. We were seated in the front where no carts and servers were passing. The same woman who helped me on the phone assisted us in getting all the food that we wanted quickly. She went and grabbed them from the carts and brought them over for us since they were not going to be passing us anytime soon. For that, I have to say I give them 5 stars in service. She was amazingly prompt, nice and helpful. Best service I have received especially in a dim sum restaurant. We ordered the following: shu mai steamed shrimp dumpling (ha gow) pan-fried shrimp and chive dumpling chicken feet tripe with ginger and scallion shrimp noodle crepe I thought the best thing was the shrimp and chive dumpling. They were huge and filled with tons of chives which I love but I know more people would prefer more shrimp to chive ratio. I am a special case. The food is decent. Not the best but not the worst. I think I would prefer Shanghai over this establishment for food quality. But in general it is hard to find good dim sum in Rochester period. The dumpling and noodle crepe has too thick of a skin and was not proportional to the filling. The chicken feet was okay. The tripe was good but needs more ginger and scallion. Food is decent but nothing to write home about for sure. Parking is pretty easy.

Ok. Nothing great. Seems like they just poured soy sauce on everything. I was quite disappointed.

This place is own by the same people that owned Cantonese House on Winton Road. They just moved here since their grocery store business is right next door making it very convenience for a lot fo patrons. I like the new place. It is very spacious compared to the previous location. However, there isn't any windows, which I really could use some outdoor light in an restaurant setting. However, this isn't seems to matter for a lot of other customers, so I think it is just me. All of the food is still the same. I think they actually added a few new dimsum item since their moved. Stop by and check them out.

Dim sum is pretty tasty and fresh and may be the best among the WNY area. Decoration is a little old and the service is so-so. Will come back to dime in again. I recommend to give a try~!

Simple yet delicious. We were so happy to find the new location. We love eating in a "non-buffet" Chinese restaurant. It's the REAL deal! Give it a try. Awesome Chicken & broccoli, general TSO and fried rice. My nephew was visiting and said he'd never had better Chinese food.

Ok I'm biased here. Best cuts of meat and labor extremely intensive for this restaurant. Lots of Chinese restaurants use preprocessed meats. Bee the owner starts with fresh chicken on the bone. The beef is fresh cut of London broil. They process there own foods in the back. They place is like a mini factory. Many of the workers are cousins to the owner and they take pride in their work. Yes the place is off the beaten path. Commerce drive is across from the old Patrick Pontiac or the new carmax. The place is always packed for dim sum. No party is too big or too small. They can accommodate all. If you eat the fried noodles anywhere in the rochester area they come from here, They produce their own noodles and wrappers. And if you like tofu they make that too. Bee takes trips to NY city to bring back the freshest produce available. Need something hard to find or special ordered? Bee can get that for you.

Just came back from dinner. Chinese New Year and the place was hopping. It was loud and full of good cheer. As busy as it was the service and wait was reasonable. The plates of food that went by looked awesome. We ordered the Chinese Broccoli with garlic. The fresh garlic was not overpowering and the oil glistened on the stems and was fresh and not overpowering. The broccoli was as perfectly cooked as it could be. Simple and awesome. We also got the twice cooked pork. Frankly I expected crispy shards of thin pork. What I got instead was pork belly that had been braised and stir-fried with Chinese cabbage, green peppers and hot peppers and garlic. The pork belly was tender and rich and tasted nicely of 5 spice powder. The sauce was deep and not too spicy. I have read many reviews of this place good and not so good. I have eaten in many amazing Chinese restaurants around the country, many so-so ones and a few downright pathetic ones. On a scale of 1-10 I would give this meal a solid 8. The restaurant obviously built onto the back of the Asian market was not well decorated on the walls but the cove lit recessed ceiling with the chandelier in the center was very nice and gave the room a nice look. I look forward to returning for more!
